I still remember vividly the last interview that Robert F. Kennedy, for whom I worked, gave in 1968. He deplored the amount of money it took even back then to wage a Presidential campaign. Even though he had the advantage of personal wealth, he realized the threat to democracy posed by our lack of a real system for publicly financed campaigns. Forty years later, we still haven't reformed our way of campaigning. Maybe a blatant attempt by Mayor Bloomberg to parlay his wealth into a candidacy will wake more people up.
