In 1983, as a student at Albany Law School, I was so bored of the curriculum that I jumped at a chance to take lessons on the Great Highland Bagpipe. Within a few years, I started composing tunes for the instrument. That led to the composition of lyrics, most of which celebrated distinguished members of the New York State Police, the magnificent Tom Constantine amd his witty sidekick Ed Culhane in particular. As the years went on, I got increasingly embedded in Albany's political life and found more grist for my versifying mill than I could ever have imagined. Some of the folks I poke fun at happen to be lawyers, but my three decades in Albany have taught me that they are humorless and venal. Give me a good red-blooded cop or newsie on the make anyday and I'll spin you a side-splitter.
