2008 Candidates Show Affinity for Atomic Energy

Uranium is all over the United States. It is a cheap and domestic source of energy and the only proven technology which can get us off the oil habit fast. If you believe that the United States' involvement in disastrous Middle Eastern affairs would be worthwhile if there were no oil there, you're just naive and unfamiliar with the history of the cold war. Second, nuclear waste is much more controllable and predictable than carbon dioxide emissions. The amount of solid waste that would be generated in one year if all electrical power in the US were from modern nuclear plants would be about the size of a small house - easily contained and monitored on site! Our own military has tons of high level nuclear material for weapons and surely they have a well developed program for containing it safely. If all the carbon dioxide generated in a year from current coal burning plants were solidified it would be the size of a mountain - and it isn't solid, it's just spewed out into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the number of people who have died due to nuclear power plant accidents pales in comparison to the number who have died in natural gas explosions and from exposure to highly carcinogenic aromatic hydrocarbons which escape into the atmosphere during refinement.
