State officials are absolutely correct in giving preference to current part-timers when filling future fulltime faculty positions in SUNY and CUNY, assuming the individuals meet the qualifications for these positions. This is already being done in California and elsewhere, because it makes a lot of sense to hire those with proven experience and loyalty to the institution. Thousands of so-called adjunct faculty members have been exploited for too long with obscenely low wages and lack of any job security. They certainly deserve to be considered first for any new full-time positions in the state systems.
