This is nothing new, immigrants come to New York, and second and third generation decendents move on. It's been going on for two hundred years, and it will continue into the future. And New York is not harmed by the fact that the rest of the country is populated by, and often led by, alumni. In my youth, the long serving Senate Majority Leader, Mike Mansfield (Montana) was a native New Yorker. Barbara Boxer, Norm Coleman and Bernard Sanders are among current legislators who are native New Yorkers.
And while some natives leave after getting college and professional degrees, New York remains the #1 attractor of the nation's and world's best an brightest in fields such as medicine, finance, the arts, advertising and law. So our top hospitals, banking concerns, orchestras, dance and opera companies, advertising agencies and law firms are populated by a group of "immigrants" native to other states and nations whose abiliites often, if not always, exceed those of our exports.
What's new, of course, is the conservative effort to pretend it hasn't happened before.
