A Dying Breed of Crooners

Submitted by Tony Procaccini, Dec 28, 2007 21:04

Mr. Friedwald is a living legend and a fountain of knowledge on the American Songbook, and I appreciate his comments on the current situation of hotel-based pianist-singers. It will help to know what to expect going forward.

Ronny Whyte is another superb performer in this arena; I recommend hearing him anywhere he plays, which included the Pierre at times. He also produces the Saint Peter's Midtown Midday Jazz Series (Lexington Avenue at 54th Street) , now 25 years young. Free for seniors and $5 for the rest of us, it's an even better bargain than one drink at a hotel.

(The writer is a pianist-singer and Sinatra aficionado.)
