Having just read some of my grandfather's normal correspondence from that era and recalling some of the amazing letters written by Army regulars in Ken Burn's Civil War on PBS, I conclude they were much better writers and conversationalists. But not having as many facts and general knowledge of the world they were much more given to theorizing and superstition. Could anyone have the following of Marx or Freud today ? No way--too many facts. On the other hand , can we approach the splendid essays and written discussions that argued pro and con on the work of those two crackpots ? Again, no.
