Black-on-Black Thought Crime

I've certainly witnessed the coarseness of thought that Kennedy describes. My wife is 1/8 African, and I personally witnessed other Ivy League graduate students criticize her professional choices as insufficiently black.

On the other hand, is Clarence Thomas, a man who seems almost unhinged by anger (c'mon, he thinks he was being "lynched" when he was called to public account, and therefore deserves a seat on the Court), really the appropriate test case? I suspect that Condoleeza Rice provokes more profound confusion than Thomas. She really is as she seems to be--professionally driven, utterly establishmentarian (I don't mean this as a bad thing), completely comfortable within the power structure. Plenty of folks on the left refuse to let her be: she ought to be, or she must secretly be, more "black."
