The Logic of Bloomberg

Submitted by MMTDad, Jan 4, 2008 10:16

I'm afraid I have to agree with the NY Sun's critics on this. The editorial page's devotion to Bloomberg's cause has caused its editors to lose their heads. The idea that support for liberal immigration reform and tort reform, both of which are stands which I support, are the issues that could elect the next president is simply not a serious analysis of the current electoral landscape. Moreover, I see no possible reason to believe that Bloomberg could outpoll any of the Democrats in New York. There is even less reason to think he could make a dent in Massachusetts merely because he was born there. As for Florida, the idea that the fact that "his daughter" has ties there would give the state to Bloomberg sounds like something one would read in a satire, not a serious political editorial. As for Texas, though I agree with Bloomberg's stand on immigration, that issue would work against him there, not in his favor. Are the chances of other candidates just as much fantasy? Clearly not. Whoever gets the Republican nomination, other than a certain loser such as Huckabee, starts with a chance, albeit a slim one in a year in which the odds favor the Democrats. Even Romney and Giuliani, both of whose prospects look dim today, would have a much better shot that Bloomberg. It is still a free country and if the mayor wishes to waste hundreds of millions of his own money on a futile and pointless run for the White House, that's his choice. But I would urge the editor of the Sun, whose editorial space I consider to be a more scarce and precious resource than Bloomberg's money, not to waste it on nonsense such as this.
