I am stunned at how my favorite and most admired newspaaper in the world could come up with such a thin proposition for a Michael Bloomberg presidential candidacy. The Sun has always maintained cosmic standards for throrughness, logic and wit. You have scrupulously held every policy idea up to the mirror of history. I like to think of it as testing on the Milton Friedman scale.
The Bloomberg proposition fails you in three ways:
Both Rudy Giuliana and Mitt Romney are excellent candidates with outstanding records of accomplishment. The campaign is just beginning. I have every expectation that either or both of them can deliver in November with a high reading on the Friedman scale.
A Bloomberg candidacy would not fail. It would never achieve lift off, any more than any of the other independent campaigns brought up by the Journal succeeded. In light of the first assertion there is no reason for a Bloomberg campaign. The idea of going to Oklahoma with that policy midget Chuck Hagel in search of the political Rosettastone bears alarming incredulity.
Your sweeping assumptions about immigration are skewed. We have two immigration problems. (a) Insecure borders that allow millions of underclass illegal immigrants to flood the Southwest Midwest, and Southeast is creating major problems with crime, financial fallout from local and state governments and sometimes cultural chaos. Thre is an overwhelming sentiment in these regions to stop ilegal immigration.
b) Globalization requires an intelligent and resourceful immigration policy and system. Aamerica has always been a magnet for the ambitious, brilliant, and enterprising young people of the world. They have always been a huge contributor to our economic well being and they have brought an inescapable cultural value that has magnifficently enriched our country.
