Mary Ann: Here's what you can do.

in response to reader comment: Who Cares about Gold Value Apartments

First: You seem to think somebody, or some agency, should be watching out for you and watching out for other people making $20,000/yr after taxes. Get over it, Mary Ann. You're on your own. Decide if you're going to sink or swim, then act on the decision.

Second: You work for the city. You're a civil servant. You have a transferable job skill and you're used to a low-paying job. You do a job of work in New York that thousands of people do elsewhere, so think about moving somewhere else where your money will go father. Almost anywhere else in the country offers a lower cost of living, and a better human environment to live in.

You sound like somebody whacking herself in the head with a hammer, complaining about the nasty headache you have. Your head will feel better when you recognize what you're doing wrong that causes you the pain. Make a choice, and live with the consequences.

While you're at it, buy some inexpensive Gold Stocks, price'd at $3 to $10 per share, that will double in value over the next 12 months, and stop spending your money on ridiculously high rent. I may be giving you more credit than you deserve though - maybe you're somebody who has credit card debt (a financial IQ test item that people fail all the time) and lease a new car (another financial IQ test item), and haven't started your retirement saving (a third financial IQ test item).

In other words Mary Ann, if you're not comfortable with your situation, change it. The price of freedom is accepting responsibility. Stop complaining. If you want to be taken care of you should move to a socialist/collectivist country somewhere.
