Although I am in my 20's and a New York student, I have come to appreciate the beautiful music of old New York and old films now called "the Standards" . My parents and I had the opportunity to experience the Café Pierre and hear the talented, Kathleen Landis perform there before it closed. As Ms. Landis stated, many people have songs connected to special events in their lives, or hear a song and remember an event connected to that music. The reason for our being there was to celebrate a special occasion with her special music in a beautiful atmosphere. We surprised my parents for their anniversary with an evening at the Café Pierre which we believe was a one-of-a-kind New York experience. The kind of intimacy and sophistication could not be duplicated anywhere else, except New York City. Ms. Landis' songs and piano arrangements covered nearly 60 years of New York theater music. In between songs, she told us about the shows and composers and played our requests. A better evening could not have been experienced, even at theater. We can only hope that people would complain loudly enough if this beautiful art form is taken away and replaced with recorded music that doesn't remember our names, our anniversaries, or the songs close to our hearts and a real part of the making of our dearest memories.
