Standardized testing is necessary. How else are we to evaluate how children are doing relative to objective standards? We need standard testing to assure that improving grades received by students do not merely reflect grade inflation, but measure something real. The trouble is that in our society, we seem to always be lacking balance. When something is considered to be good, we overdo it. When something appears to have some negative associations with it, we ban it. We seem to be unable to balance the good features against negative effects of excess. We need to have standardized testing, but consider having fewer of them. Don't give up valuable features of the school curriculum merely in order to improve test scores.
