If you sent more underachievers - of any ethnicity - to Ivy League colleges at the expense of more gifted applicants, then you would not find these groups better represented in the higher echelons of society. What would happen instead is that in the future, fewer and fewer high achievers would be alumni of the top schools. Of course, it would only be a matter of time before you could no longer refer to the Ivy League colleges as 'top schools', and the more meritocratic institutions that would take their place at the head of the pack would then face new calls to become less meritocratic and more 'inclusive' and we would be back to where we started.
