John Granville

The significance of supplying radios to a rural population does not impact most people. On my last trip to Sudan, the director of information for Aweil County begged me to bring a radio station to the area. This would help the people communicate and know what is going on around them. There is no transportation, no phone system. It is the stone age.

To have radios at this time is far more important than conveying general local information. Next year, elections will take place in Sudan. Having a communication system to spread information regarding major political events, especially voting, is critical not only to the Southern Sudanese but to all Africa, and yes, to us here in America. Already, the Islamic National Front government of Sudan hiding behind "National Congress Party" are buying votes of the starving people in the South to ensure the brutal dictator Omer al Bashir is re-instated into power. John Granville knew the historical impact of his work to supply radios and the Sudanese government did as well. For anyone to think they were not behind this assassination, just as they were the US ambassador's assasination in 1973, is naiive, at best.

It is imperative that the radio distribution program continue inspite of this tragic murder of a man on a very important mission. I am grateful for his service and regret the sacrifice of his life.
