The Mitford Myth
in response to reader comment: An intriguing review of Letters

Submitted by Peggy Andrew-Kabilafkas, Jan 7, 2008 19:03

Well I have to confess that I am completely fascinated by this family of women (sorry Tom). It is a homeric saga spanning the political and social drama of the twentieth century, except that it also encompasses the minutiae of family relationships that I think we would not have been privy to had the people involved been male. I have just finished the book and was completely absorbed by the interactions of the sisters. I have read Mary Lovell's book a few years ago, as well as Diana's autobiography, Selina's Hastings' "Nancy Mitford", "Love in a Cold Climate", "Hons and Rebels" etc etc. I am continually drawn to this family and the times that they lived. They were obviously fantastically gifted and strange, ostensibly the ultimate product of British eccentricity and with these gifts of intellect and wit, there was the social interplay of their time and country, which produced such a plethora of fascinating (and horrifying) events. I would have dearly loved to hear the way they spoke. I loved this book of letters. Admit.
