I can agree with much of what Mr. McWhorter says, but I do see some problems with it. First of all, I cannot abide Clarence Thomas. I think that he is a bitter and dangerous man. Secondly -- and I guess that it is related -- I don't think that we should replace calling black conservatives "Uncle Toms" or "Sellouts" with liberal bashing. I have a feeling that Mr. McWhorter is more into this than is Mr. Kennedy. (I promise to read the book -- all three of the books.)
I also think that Affirmative Action had its place and time. (I often think that a time limit on the whole process after which it would have ended might have been a good thing -- and I know that that is politically naive, but I still think it.) Even Clarence Thomas admits that he benefited from it; and, had he not been attacked on the sexual harassment front, he may have been a different man -- and Justice.
Why can't we have people who push for reform, who abhor and fight against discrimination and who also let black people know that they are responsible for their own actions? I bet we do have many such people.
