This is an interesting article. However, words are words and numbers are numbers.
Would you consider using graphs to illustrate your statements? For example a graph of the nominal deficit, a graph of GDP and a graph of the deficit as percentage of GDP. Run the graphs for 16 or 20 years to show the trend through different administrations and Congressional sessions.
You would make your point concisely. More importantly, you would create a precedent of anchoring editorial in fact and save readers from drifting in a swell of partisan assertion.
