McCain wont win the nomination because a majority of Republicans (remember us, the people who actually vote for Republicans) dont want our party hijacked by a "moderate" who depends on crossover voters from the Democrats to win primaries. He did that last time he ran for president, by the way, and lost.
If the Republicans are in trouble politically now, it is precisely because they have abandoned the principles the vast majority of us believe in - if you dont rememeber what those principles were, I suggest that you take a trip to the library and read up on a guy named Reagan.
Guess what; most Republicans DO NOT want their party turned into a "get-along" gang like the old Republican party of the 1970s. That party cooperated with the Democrats and was so "collegial" that it almost vanished. Sen. McCain's real offering to the Republicans is the loss of their political "soul".
