Gibbs Ends Forgettable Chapter in Sterling Career

Submitted by Chuck Felch, Jan 10, 2008 14:26

The Smith article is a little misleading. Joe Gibbs' return to Washington did far more than just fall short of the Super Bowl. Gibbs took over a joke club in the wake of the hapless Spurrier years that had proved a disaster, the aborted Schottenheimer run and the waste of time which was the Norv Turner era. Joe took a single year to rebuild the team in his image before bringing the Skins to the playoffs in his second year back. Getting to the postseason was something that had only been accomplished once before by the club in the previous 12 years. Though Gibbs' third year proved difficult with a new and complicated offensive system that took getting used to as well as the uncharacteristic letdown of the Gregg Williams defense, the fourth year back saw one of Coach Gibbs' most defining seasons as a coach when he helped the players overcome a 5-7 record and the death of a teammate to finish 9-7 and claim the last playoff spot.

The club has been left in better shape and is poised to again make the playoffs next year if their new coach doesn't choose to rebuild the team with a radically different system. Coach Gibbs restored confidence and the image of a franchise that had been languishing since he left the club in 1993 and I think your article would have been better served to mention some of the notable accomplishments he brought to the Redskins in his second-go-round - even if he doesn't walk away from the franchise with an additional Super Bowl ring. His return to Washington was quite memorable and Redskin fans thank him for continuing to bless us with his God-given abilities.
