What an impressive selection of recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. All of them are deserving of the award and none more so than Natan Sharansky whose life and work may be said to have been an inspiration for President Bush's Second Inaugural Address. By recognizing the link between the promotion of freedom and democracy in the world and the protection of America's national interest, President Bush was asserting one of Sharansky's first principles and setting the course for American foreign policy for decades to come. I believe that history will judge the informal alliance between Bush and Sharansky as a turning point in the fight against tyranny.
