Bloomberg for No. 2 Spot Is Tempting for Some

Although Bloomberg would bring a lot of positives to the Office of the President, I hope he won't run. We are slipping into a recession, if we are not already in one. Unlike his predecessor, who got out of town just as the last recession was starting, leaving Bloomberg with a fiscal black hole, Bloomberg is already taking prudent steps to cut spending. It would be very bad for New York City if his attentions were diverted elsewhere, just when start slipping into a recession. Worse for his chances, New Yorkers might strongly resent his turning his attentions to the national scene just when we need his steady fiscal management most, and turn agaisnt him at the ballot box. Stay, Mr. Mayor, New York needs you more than ever. After Mike's turn ends in 2009, he can still think about running in 2012. My guess is that, whomever the winner turns out to be this time around, he or she will have such a fight to right this country after tha catastrophic Bush administration, that he or she will be anything but a shoe-in in 2012. And Bloomberg will still be younger than some of the candidates running in this round.
