New York Spanish, a New Dialect, Rises

Submitted by Ernie Garcia, Jan 17, 2008 08:05

If you watch Univision, you'll hear a hybrid Spanish spoken on that network that doesn't sound like any Spanish in Latin America. It's a jumble of accents for some presenters or a homogenated Spanish by some of the news anchors. I'm a fluent Spanish speaking US-born Mexican American, yet immigrant Mexicans never recognize my Spanish as Mexican. I always joke to them that I speak Univision Spanish. Maybe now I'll just say I speak New York Spanish.
