Bloomberg has finally, unequivocally shown himself to have an extremely low level of discernment, and virtually no perspective. This is good; it makes his oft-promoted (in this otherwise highest quality sheet) independent candidacy for president a patently bad idea. Part one, there is every difference in the world between being "against immigration" and, or "embracing xenophobia," and being against ILLEGAL immigration.

Secondly, Bloomberg obviously has learned nothing from whatever history he has in fact read (a common failing, and a major disqualification for leadership); the America of the 21st century is not the same relatively sparsely populated geo-political entity that it was 100 years ago and before, when the vast waves of immigrants flowed into this land, for the most part LEGALLY. Virtually every aspect of society has dramatically changed, not the least of which is the basic size of the population. The fact that some other nations have a much denser population is irrelevant. Further, as I have pointed out more than once, in comments on this site, there is a very large component of 3rd-, 4th-, 5th-, and more-generation Americans who possess a much diminished appreciation for, and even belief in the foundational principles which led to the formation of the United States.

Almost as bad, if his rant was a purely politically motivated contrivance, Bloomberg has shown himself to be the same petty, power seeking, would-be president as the vast majority of those who run for the office, making blanket accusations aimed at provoking irrationally emotional support from those whose own personal interests prevent them from seeing the larger picture. Equally, that type of gutter hype appeals to those liberal elements who denegrate the founding principles of this nation--in the name of the same!

Shame on the NY Sun for promoting such a little man.
