Arthur Laffer: Corporate Social Responsibility Detrimental to Stockholders

Submitted by William Gall, Jan 22, 2008 10:10

The Western world as a whole has done a great job of compartmentalizing life, to the detriment of the quality of life. The stockholder's well-being is not simply measured mathematically in dollars and cents. If you wish to narrow the frame of reference in this way you are truncating what it means to be human. Yes, my value system is derived from Christianity, from Jesus who said, "A man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions" and "I came to bring life, abundant life." Of what does abundant life consist? This question is worth contemplating whether or not you are a follower of Jesus Christ. Also, Al Gore's message is not to be discounted; there are too many facts there, for those of you who are partial to the "hard" facts. Sustainability as an issue that will not go away, unless one is determined to over-simplify financial matters, like an ostrich burying its head in the sand. If that's your strategy, well, that's your strategy- a very short-term focus.
