Are you kidding me? Backwards? What's wrong with backwards? The essence of conservatism is to conserve those values that made America great, those values of the founding of our country. It's more accurate to describe this as classical liberalism. I agree that the recent past is not so hot, but let's not throw away the philosophical foundations of conservatism to appeal to the other side. We can broaden our appeal to the great apolitical middle by better selling our values, not compromising them.
Surely politics is the art of compromise, but not at the expense of foundational principals. Senator McCain has too many times played the Maverick, sold out conservative principals to the delight of the mainstream media and liberal plaudits. Sorry, but I can't forget that. In a general election, Romney's executive experience trumps either Senator. We'll see if he gets the chance.
