The only question is why do these myths exist? The answer lies in the State Department and the CIA. These are the "realists" or more accurately appeasers. They used to be called detentistes is you remember the awful 1970's when it appeared that the Russians would inherit the world. It's the favored foreign policy outlook of Mearsheimer, Walt, Carter, Nixon, Kissinger et al.
