Orwell Would Be Proud

It's the little things that make you realize the gulf and our total lack of cultural self-belief. Like the hijab-wearing girl in the Melaka supermarket who refused to place my hermetically sealed pack of sliced ham into the carry bag along with the other groceries. I rapidly defused an international incident by packing my lunch myself. Personally, I'd pack a bag of excrement if it was well-sealed and the customer wanted it.
Then there was the time when I was relief-teaching in Alice Springs where I was confronted by a notice on the staff-room fridge advising that pork products were not to be placed inside, apparently because there were one or two Muslims on the staff - superstition obviously trumps salmonella in some politically-correct minds. Perhaps, next time you're in a Muslim country you can ask the adjacent mosque ( they're always adjacent ) to hold their very amplified 5am calls-to-prayer because they disturb your sleep.....fat chance I'd wager !
