I have to say that as a New York Sun reader who's been a fan from the first issue, and who's come to rely on your paper for its insightful and forward-thinking Arts and Sports sections, I am appalled and dismayed at the entire premise of this article. Let's just put aside the absurd and dated concept of grading a school based on its chances of getting you into Harvard, Princeton, or any other college or university; and let's put aside the criteria of judging a school based on endowment (as financial services companies might want to base their strengths on their current capitalizations, or newspapers based on their circulations); and let's also figure that the ludicrous idea of a grade survey for schools on the front page of your paper was based on some ratings hungry editor trying to create a sensation. What outrages me--a father of two daughters who go to two of the schools you've graded as well as being a graduate of another--is that you've displayed such callous and insensitive behavior that serves no purpose but to flaunt vanity or injure. My hope is that this survey and these letter grades will, as another letter writer just wrote, vanish into obscurity. But for children who might be taunted, teased or ostracized by their peers or friends (or their friends parents) for attending a B school, or a C school, or a D school, it will be too late. Your paper has sunk to the lowest, worst impulses in journalism, not to mention an overly class-conscious society, by creating and endorsing this survey. I would have expected better of you.
