Just to respond to Kris' opinion. I partially agree with your comment that the military could be a good influence. But not with the situation right now. And what seems to be happening is that both the military and gang members are taking advantage of each other. The number of recruits is going down, so the military recruiters have the "we'll get anything" mentality. In some cases they won't even realize that a recruit is under a federal indictment! Plus why do you think the number is going down? There is no positive anything in the military going on right now. And vice versa, gang members join the military to learn war tactics and/or weaponry etc... Some will falsify the military weapon inventory to sell stolen weapons to the outsiders. I can list a bunch. It is one thing to say the military is a good thing for troubled ones, but I think it is very important to look at the consequences if you don't follow certain rules, meaning the military should have some kind of prevention system for those who are affiliated with gangs outside. I agree that not all gang members are ruthless killers, but there are ones with brains. Gang members who have been military trained come out to the US streets with an access to weapons. Imagine more streets in the US will be supplied with more weapons and more dangerous, tactical gangs? Is that a way to go? That seems more likely than not. There should be a precautionary phase within the military recruits for possible enlistees with gang affiliation. There are too many variables that makes it very difficult to simply say "Gang members should be allowed to join the military." Think about it!
