Canton Has Yet To Welcome Some of Football's Best

You forgot to mention that Griese did go to eight Pro Bowls, that he won NFL MVP awards in two different years, that Howard Cosell called him the best quarterback in the NFL in 1978 in Sport Magazine (while Staubach, Bradshaw, Stabler, Jones, et al were playing at the top of their game), and that he was generally considered the greatest play caller in the game during his era. Yes, he called all his own plays, which led to a lot of wins for the winningest coach in the history of pro football. He was an unselfish play caller, and got just as much thrill getting a running TD as a passing one. So to judge him by number of TD's thrown (which is still a fairly high percetnage for his era) is unfair. That wasn't the kind of player he was.

What team was the winningest team during the 1970's, not only in pro football, but in all of professional sports? Yes, the Miami Dolphins. Who quarterbacked that team throughout that entire decade? Bob Griese.

What will any quarterback worth his salt say is more important-- whether they won or lost or how many touchdown passes they threw? You can judge Griese by his winning. He knew how to chew up a clock and keep the other offense off the field, and walk off calmly with another win.

John Brodie was a fine quarterback. But he can't lay claim to Bob Griese's level of accomplishment.
