Animal Rights May Get Seat in City Classrooms

Submitted by Ashley, Feb 7, 2008 11:57

As a person who actually teaches humane education in schools all over New York City, I can assure you that it is NOT an animal rights vs. welfare curriculum that is brought into the classroom. Sure, we do discuss animals and address the issue of their suffering, but we also discuss the impact each and every one of us has on this planet. It saddens me to see you people reacting with such disdain for something you should be happy we're bringing to young peoples' lives. So many of these kids have nothing to look forward to when they walk in their front door; there's not a lot of love in their lives. Humane Education helps kids understand that it's OK to care for somebody or something other than themselves. We help them realize that what they do matters and that compassion is a strong virtue, not a weak one.
Sounds like some of you could use such lessons
