GOP Control of State Senate in Jeopardy

Submitted by Anonymous, Feb 8, 2008 10:44

While many in the media would love to be able to sign the death warrant of the GOP's Senate majority, that may not be as easy to do as some suspect. For better or worse, New York legislative incumbents are notoriously difficult to unseat -- particularly when they have been around for a long time. Also, Governor Spitzer's radical proposals on driver licenses for illegal immigrants, same-sex marriage, and passing a law that would further cement New York's status as the abortion mecca of the United States do not necessarily sit well with more moderate Democrats. If Hillary Clinton wins the nomination, it is also possible that fear of another Clinton presidency could cause both conservative and independent voters to flock to the polls in droves in November. The bottom line is that it would be premature, to say the least, to stick a fork in the Republican Party and crown Malcolm Smith the new Senate Majority Leader.
