Considering this film is presented not as a biographical overview, but as a freely adapted story line of a past relationship I was quite impressed by both actors. Ms. Sarandon presented her character in a liquid reality that literally flowed from one 'conversation' to the next. She was excellent. Mr. Feines was 'soto voce' brilliant. Always understated yet always in control. I don't know beans about Mrs. 'D"s personal life, aside from her being sort of a last gasp of WASP America which aside from the 'preserved' Sunny von Bulow up in a private suite at Columbia Presbyterian, no longer exists. But the basically 2 person drama of 'Bernard and Doris' was excellent entertainment. It may not have been a history lesson, but what value would that have been? It was the story of two interdependant people who had the good grace to endure one another.
