The Multicolored And the Macabre
in response to reader comment: Kirshnet's Concertgebouw review

Submitted by Ben Meltz, Feb 11, 2008 13:22

I agree with what Gregg says about the sheen of the BPO's strings compare to the Concertgebouw's, though it's a mistake to automatically elevate Abbado to a level so much higher than Janson's. But I disagree strongly that the quality of the Leipzig Gewandhaus's Mahler 5 was so much better than the Concertgebouw's. In my opinion, the Concertgebouw played the Mahler considerably better - they are simply a much more polished orchestra. I didn't hear Leipzig play Don Juan, but their Mahler was just not as good.
