I agree that Mr. Obama is charasmatic and has the ability to move millions of people. However, there is simply no doubt that his candidacy is fueled largely by virtue of the fact that he is black. People like that about him, whether they want to admit it or not, as much as anything else. History shows us that a freshman Senator never gets this opportunity - unless you're JFK. JFK had a unique and powerful political machine behind him. He overcame Catholicism to win. If Obama wins, he will not be overcoming his race, he'll have it to thank. The fact is that an overwhelming % of blacks are voting for Obama, and are voting for the first time in a long time or ever. If Obama were white, I doubt this would be the case. That is the author's point. You saw words and intent that simply weren't there. If I were black, I'd vote for Obama unless he were completely incompetent. As a white guy, I may still vote for Obama, and if I do, a good part of that will be b/c of his skin color. Nevertheless, if Obama were white, he wouldn't be on the ticket to begin with.
