Hillary Clinton's Last Hope
in response to reader comment: The truth about the payroll tax increase

Submitted by Tate Shafer, Feb 12, 2008 13:50

At this point it is becoming relatively clear that Hillary's grasp on the Democratic electorate is fading. She's been getting pummeled in caucus-format elections, where the candidate and his/her campaign members get more direct interaction with the voters. That's because his message and vision are better. All of Hillary's wins are coming from (1) big states with lots of early voting, (2) states with a logical affinity to her based on location (Arkansas and New York for example), and (3) states where Obama did not campaign because there was nothing to gain (Michigan, Florida).

Notice that I said EARLY VOTING. Throughout this election process Obama has been turning voters to his camp more and more--there's a direct correlation between his ascension in the polls and the degree to which he's able to spread his message directly to the Democratic voter base.

One by one, we're all beginning to see the light. We're tired of the status quo in Washington, and while Hillary would present some obvious differences to the current administration, her Presidency would still MORE OF THE SAME, with only a more liberal bent to it. It would be the same cronyism. The same special-interest favoritism. The same Machiavellian machinations of a corrupt, self-serving political process. Do we really want to return to the divisiveness of another Clinton regime? Does anyone remember what a roller-coaster ride that was? And that was when BILL--the more charismatic and diplomatic of the pair--was the one in charge, not Hillary!

Obama-mania is ever-present right now, and with good reason: he inspires us. I cannot remember ever feeling about a politician the way that I do when Obama speaks. He fills me with hope. He sends shivers down my spine. He makes me yearn for what it would be like to live in a nation where his vision is even only partially fulfilled. He's made me want to contribute to rebuilding this great Democracy, and I believe that millions of my Generation X peers feel the same way. I think that's an unbelievable accomplishment for a generation that was years ago written off as being hopelessly apathetic.

One other thought to contribute: let's think about motives. Barack legitimately seems like a man who is driven simply by his desire to make this nation great again and his belief that he's the right person to lead that procession. Hillary seems like an opportunistic, power-hungry, narcissistic politician who feels entitled to the Presidency because she's "done all the right things" and "checked all the right boxes" to get there. She feels the Presidency is owed to her, because she's been playing the part over the last 16 years as neatly and perfectly as possible to ensure her success today. That thinking is completely wrong--just like anyone else, she has to earn it, and she's done nothing to convince me she deserves it. I believe that when she loses to Obama, things could get very ugly.
