Islam's Silent Majority

Ms. Colon wrote: "I found it comforting to learn from Mr. Taylor that, of the 1.3 billion Muslims in the world, 85% to 90% are traditional, non-radical believers." However, just yesterday, the Associated Press reported that support for bin Laden in Pakistan dropped from 45% last August to "only 24%" last month. The population of Pakistan is about 170 million people. This means that the support for bin Laden dropped from 78 million people to only 40 million people. And that is only in Pakistan. What a relief to know that bin Laden's supporters are only a tiny minority! The obvious problem with trying to define "moderate" Moslems, or "traditional, non-radical believers" is that we are looking at a continuum from totally secular Moslems to radical Moslem terrorists. There are lots of people inbetween, but the 85-90% figure is grossly misleading. As the polls conclusively show (and not just in Pakistan, but in many other Moslem countries, scores of millions of "traditional" Moslems support bin Laden, want Israel destroyed, are willing to riot, burn and murder if they don't like certain cartoons. These "traditional" Moslems also want sharia to be imposed on the whole world eventually -- just as the Koran and Muhammad called for. Let us not forget that not a single Moslem country has signed on to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. ALL Moslem countries signed on to their own Cairo Declaration of Human Rights in Islam which explicitly makes Sharia the only source of rights and which explicitly declares that Islam is superior to all other belief systems. Who know how many millions or even hundreds of millions of Moslems are Islamic supremacists who want Islam to dominate throughout the world just as much as the violent jihadists do but who are willing to take a long-term, more non-violent approach in order to achieve it.

If only 10% of 1.3 billion Muslims are radical, that's 130,000,000. That's comforting?
