We are in a solar cycle and have been for some time. Temperature probes on Mars have recorded a slight increase in surface temperature. I don't think the Martians are worried! This planet is subject to cyclic changes and has done do since it was created. Don't worry about it! It wasn't too long ago that some supposed genius said the world was cooling and caused a similar panic.
If you want to worry about something substantial and truly frightening, be concened about our ability to produce sufficient crude oil to meet the demands of a petroleum thirsty world. It is very likely, we as a society have reached the point where global fuel (and natural gas) production has peaked and is entering a long-term and irreversable decline. Some oil fields are declining as much as 20% per year! We are not discovering new fields to replace what we have used. Short answer, we are in very big trouble as 95%+ of transportation is powered by liquid fuels. Oil helps us produce sufficient quantities of crops. Oil produces essential fertilizers, plastics and medicines, etc. Paints, adhesives, lubricants, jet fuel, inks are all made from petroleum. It is possible that by mid-century, we will only be able to produce half (or less) crude oil as we do today! Read Twilight in the Desert by Mr. Matt Simmons. Read his reports and presentations. Read www.theoildrum.com.
Once the public understands that we will have difficulty maintaining even current crude oil production levels, they will realize that we cannot grow economies and companies as we have done in the past. As a result, we cannot grow our way to prosperity but will have to make do in a world of scarcity. You should be aware that Dr. Bernanke, the Fed chief, by lowering short-term interest rates, he is destroying the international value of the dollar and by doing so will render it a poor store of value for savers, investors and central banks. Soon, people will have to be worried about return of their money rather than a return on the money! We may be on the brink of a devastating depression where prices for staple goods rise incrediably while fixed asset prices, like houses, continue to fall. Wages are falling in real terms in most areas. The Federal Government may well owe unfunded liabilities in the neighborhood of $ 65 - $76 Trillion! Clearly, this cannot be sustained. Something has to give. When I hear of the candidates for president push national health care and other freebies, I ask myself/...How can this be funded by the average American? Answer, it can't! None of the candidates have spoken about the real risks we face in a world short of petroleum products. You, Mr. Mayor, have demonstrated that you know little about science and out increasing interdependence which in reality is our society's Achillie's Heel!
If I, as a small business owner, can understand that Global Warming is rubbish, why can't you?
