Amazon Fights Spitzer Plan To Collect Taxes

Submitted by NY Bookseller, Feb 13, 2008 08:55

I'm an online bookseller in NY and I have to pay sales tax on all sales to NY addresses, whether or not I actually am able to collect sales tax from them. For example, if I sell a book through eBay to another New Yorker, eBay allows for me to collect tax from them, based on the percentage in that county. However, Amazon, Abebooks, and Alibris ("the 3 "A's") have NO WAY for me to collect sales tax from NY orders! The order is handled through their website and the order is forwarded to me. I can't go back and request "a little bit more" to cover the sales tax. However, I have to pay this sales tax out of my pocket to New York state, which amounts to $100s of dollars per year! There's no reason that "the 3 A's" can't see that an order to a NY address from a NY seller should get charged sales tax! If eBay can do it.... GO SPITZER!
