Good book review but hard to believe. If this were true, there wouldn't be so many bar brawls or hoodies and yobs out there attacking innocent citizens. And I would imagine that the first thing the military would do would be to desensitize one to violence before sending the troops out to battle. In battle, one's survival instincts kick in and that trumps shooting down the enemy.
The author is right about namby-pamby people like intellectual "elites" and people like you and me. We abhor violence and would do much to avoid it. In fact, I had a depressing dream the other day where someone was being attacked and I stood idly and helplessly by watching it without helping. But the majority of trained cops, soldiers, firemen, etc. would do their job without hesitation. As they always say, the instinct (from training) kicks in as soon as the bullets start flying.
