Shocks, Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll

Your review of "Next to Normal" was dead-on. I have been going to the theater in New York since Mary Martin burst into song at the opening of "A Sound of Music." I've seen some great musicals, I've seen some not-so-great musicals, I've seen some terrible musicals, and then there's "Next to Normal." I saw it several weeks prior to its official opening, and the four friends I was with and I, with barely a word of discussion among us, all got up and walked out after the first act, the closing number of which is, I believe, the single most tasteless musical number I have ever seen on a New York stage. And to think Michael Grief directed "Rent"!
