Thank you for an interesting article. However, you failed to mention the most obvious reason why foreign-born high school students may do better than younger ones. Could it possibly be that their public school education is better than the US? That they are better prepared in maths and sciences prior to coming to the US? We are all aware that our public school education falls way behind internationally, even in poor locations. Of course, the high school students hav a disadvantage in language skills (which is why they do more pporly in those areas at first). But their training in math, science and other areas is probably more comprehensive. Just my take.
