One problem, though, and that is that with long guns, shotguns or other non-handguns, they MUST be either broken down and secured by trigger lock or other similar device or they mys be secured in a safe and in any case be nowhere near ammunition. Additionally, an "owner" must request for and receive permission to move it, even from one room to another. That applies only to law-abiding citizens because the law-ignoring citizens, who love this setup, will never be held accountable.
About thirty or so years ago a gentleman and his wife had their apartment crashed by an overzealous gestapo unit which later became the BATFE. As I recall, the Washington Post reported thisbreakin as an unannounced raid by this Federal Agency. The man, believing that his life and that of his wife were in mortal jeopardy, armed himself with a blackpowder pistol and attempted to defend his home, but was gunned down dead. The upstart of this whole situation was that the Feds had raided the apartment based on unverified third party information and had made the raid on the wrong floor. The outcome was that the agents were cleared of any wrong doing while the shooting was justified as assault on Federal Agents. My point is that the lawful citizens of the District are at the mercy of anyone who assaults them with little legal remedy to defend their homes and persons. While a shotgun would have been a better choice for home defense and a rifle would have provided some protection, by disregarding the Constitution when it comes to the rights of free people in a democratic republic a citizen's rights are cancelled and his or her life is forfeit when localities dictate whether or not the Law of the Land applies to the citizenry.
