Ms. Colon, who has in the past written eloquently in support of rebuilding the Twin Towers (and she is astonishingly eloquent, no matter what the subject) has in a way done that again. As one of the founders of the Twin Towers Alliance, it is hard to read about what a great country this is without it calling to mind the sorry plan to paper over the real the World Trade Center that is going on downtown. The Twin Towers were a kind of shorthand for the exuberant American spirit and their senseless replacement with a random assortment of so-so buildings is painful to many, many New Yorkers, Americans, and friends around the world.

The incomparable American spirit is still under attack at Ground Zero, where the majestic Twins are being replaced with a "modest" complex -- nothing "overpowering" or "bold". But it is not too late to restore the most famous skyline in the world and watch our spirits rise with the Towers. In fact, rebuilding the Twin Towers would be the single surest sign that we have finally gotten over our concussion and are coming back better than ever. Thank you, Alicia, for reminding us, on Washington's birthday, that Americans have good reason to be proud of our exuberant, extraordinary country. And thank you for your continuing support for a World Trade Center that is worthy of the name.
