It shows committment to go out and visit the battlegrounds mentioned and to know they are there, ths echoes Lawrences English life with the room built for him in the garden of Polstead Road still there although enlarged to cope with demands of modern property lets.

The important point is when 'The Severn Pillars of Wisdom ' was written it was on the wave of the British Army's greatest triumph, a combining of strategy, technology and endevour with the jewel of the crown to hold Jerusalem. Perhaps this was the end of war as it was known, alas not, unfortuneatley politics could not match the military success and all unravelled into the 'Middle East' we know today.

If an American officer could herald a 'new wave' which would incapacitate Al Quaeda and bring Iraq to prosperity then he would see any cost in life justified and feel ready to record that, that 'was what was done'?

T E's beautiful gold arab clothes as on display at the moment in the Ashmolean museum, a worthy exhibit to one of Oxford's modern heros
