Anyone who thinks their own privite arsenal would stand a chance against the police and their far better armed swat team, let alone the national guard, is seriously deluded. Seriously. If THAT is why people out there think they need to own guns - as opposed to owning them for self-protection aginst criminals, which I can sympathize with, up to a point - they have serious issues with reality. Arming yourself against the police will get you one thing. Dead. Furthermore, the founders in no way condoned or promoted that view. Just th eopposite if you interpret the 2nd amendment the traditional way, as a right of the people to bear arms for use in a well-regulated militia - i.e. the army of old times. This would be to bear arms in SUPPORT of the police, or perhaps only the "militia" but certainly not in opposition to it. Washington must be turning over in his grave.
I will try to dig out some of Thomas Paine's old federalist papers, however. I did finish Commen Sense recently, though, and nowhere in there does it say anything about self-arming for protection against criminals. He was only worried - justifiably - about the British storming our land and homes.
