Why I Resigned

Submitted by Florian Lewenstein, Feb 23, 2008 08:26

I am saddened that Ms. Ravitch found it necessary to write that she admires Mayor Bloomberg. The only thing "admirable" about the mayor is that he has accumulated billions, the American dream. He needs to be brought to heel before he does more harm. Platitudes like Ms. Ravitch's don't help. They are part of that general media "head in the sand" posture to which Ms. Ravitch refers. It is necessary that people of Ms. Ravitch's stature who have a voice stand up and talk about what Mayor Bloomberg and Chancelor Klein have perpetrated in their pursuit of "school reform." Ms. Ravitch is a research professor, and her focus on the numbers tends to divert attention from the broader picture of an administration that is out of control.
