It is true that Mr. Obama, as Mr. Reagan did, trades on hope. But, where Reagan held out the hope that authority might be restrained from involvng itself deeply in the lives of the citizenry and thus allow individual Americans room to compete, invent, and build to the benefit of us all, Mr. Obama offers the hope that authority will strip successful Americans of much of their wealth and American business of much of its capital in order to make life for the failed and resentful more tolerable, and the failed and resentful more numerous. This hope of Mr. Obama's is common, watery Democratic Party socialism---it is nothing new, even if it is charmingly packaged.
