In Shift, City Is Promoting Expansion of Maritime Industry

Back in the 60's & 70's, the Brooklyn waterfront was still a busy place, even as the Manhattan waterfront was coming to an end. The advent of containers and larger vessels changed the way the industry thought, even today. Port Newark and Port Elizabeth are the last vestige of a proud industry.

I'll bet that 96% of all vessels entering the harbor are foreign built, owned & operated with foregin crews. And none of these companies want to spend funds on skilled NY labor, regardless of the dollar vs the Euro. Land for cargo terminal operations is one thing and ship repair is another animal.

How about combined use for ferry services so New Yorkers who insist on driving from Staten Island & Brooklyn/Queens can park and ride. Then all we need is free bus transport to the ferry and watch!
